The Thirty-Yard Repeat

One fast sprint is a talent. Twelve fast sprints in a row is a trained quality — and it is the one that shows up on Friday.

Testing rewards the single best effort. Competition rewards the athlete whose eighth sprint is still within a few hundredths of the first. Those are different abilities, and only one of them wins games.

The protocol

  • 8 x 30 yards, 45 seconds rest, timed every rep.
  • Stop the set when any rep falls more than 5% off the fastest one.
  • Record the number of reps you held, not the average time.
  • Repeat every three weeks under identical conditions.

The score you want to move is reps-held. Getting from five to eight is worth more in a game than shaving a hundredth off a single sprint you take once a year at a testing day.

Log every set in Athlete Tools so the trend argues for you.
