The Block Start Is a Force Problem

Reaction time is a rounding error. What separates starts is how much force you can put into the block and the first four contacts — and what the track gives back.

Sprinters spend hours drilling the sound of the gun and minutes thinking about the surface they are pushing against. That is backwards. Reaction time varies by a few hundredths between good athletes. Force application over the first four contacts varies by far more, and it is trainable.

The first four contacts decide the race you are in

Out of the blocks, contact times are long — well over two tenths of a second — and shin angles are shallow. You are not bouncing yet, you are pushing. By the fourth contact you are already halfway to your race posture, and any energy leaked into a dead platform is energy you never get to spend on acceleration.

  • Push through the front block until the hip is fully extended, then let the shin angle rise on its own.
  • Keep the first two contacts behind the hip, not in front of it — reaching kills acceleration.
  • Film from the side at 120 fps. Shin angle and heel recovery tell the truth; feel does not.
  • Run starts fresh, at the front of the session, never as conditioning at the end.

The platform underneath the push

A block start is the single most one-directional force a sprinter produces. Whatever sits between the foot and the plate either holds firm and sends that force into the track, or compresses and eats part of it. Force plate testing at Weber State University showed it took more than twice the force to displace a person standing on Springsoles — a stability property, and exactly the property a start needs.

A drill block that actually transfers

  • Two speed days per week, 48 hours apart, starts before anything else.
  • 6 to 10 block starts at 10 to 30 meters, full recovery between reps.
  • One 'wall' or hill acceleration session per week for pure push mechanics.
  • Re-test a timed 10-meter fly and a 30-meter from blocks every three weeks.

Change one variable at a time and keep the receipts. Add a 3/32-inch responsive layer to a spike that already fits, then re-run the same 30, on the same track, at the same time of day.
