The .15 Nobody Talks About

NFL combine scouts deduct fifteen hundredths of a second for turf. Here is what that number really tells you about your playing surface.

Every scout at every combine knows it, and almost no athlete trains around it: a 40-yard dash run on artificial turf is slower than the same 40 run on a rubberized track. The accepted correction is roughly .15 of a second. Same athlete. Same legs. Same lungs. Different ground.

That number is not a rounding error. In a combine field, .15 separates a draft conversation from a highlight reel nobody watches. In a district final, it separates the athlete who gets there first from the athlete who arrives to the play already over.

Why the surface wins

Speed comes down to a time-honored formula: shorten footplant time and increase stride length. A resilient surface accomplishes both at once. It returns a portion of the force you put into it, so your foot leaves the ground sooner and travels farther before it lands again.

Grass absorbs. Dirt absorbs. Concrete punishes. A hardwood floor is fast in short bursts and brutal over four quarters. Unless your sport is track and field, you almost never compete on the surface that would make you fastest.

You cannot change the field. You can change the shoe.

The alternative is to put a surface more resilient than a rubberized track inside the shoe you already compete in. Springbak® Springsoles are built from a proprietary blend of natural and butadiene rubber — butadiene carrying roughly 15% more resilience than any other material — in a component 3/32nds of an inch thick.

The thinness is the point. Bulk changes your fit, raises your foot off the platform of the shoe, and dulls the feel you spent years developing. A performance platform that sits under your existing insole, snug against the hard surface of the shoe, does not ask you to relearn anything.

Whether your surface is dirt, grass, concrete, hardwood or turf, you can carry the benefits of a rubberized track with you.

What to do with this

  • Time yourself on two surfaces in the same session — you will feel the difference before the stopwatch confirms it.
  • Stop blaming your start for a slow field. Diagnose the ground first.
  • Treat what is under your foot as equipment, not as packaging.

You already do the work. The ground should not be the thing taking it back from you.
