Ask a hundred athletes how to add to their vertical and ninety-five will answer with a lift. Squat more. Clean more. Jump onto a taller box. All of it works, and all of it ignores the half-second where the jump is actually decided: the moment your foot is on the floor.

Force has to go somewhere

A vertical jump is a negotiation. You drive force down; the surface decides how much of it comes back. Anything soft under the foot — thick foam, a broken-down insole, a shoe two seasons past its life — takes a cut of every rep for itself.

In force plate testing at the Weber State University Human Performance Laboratory, Dr. Howard Gray found athletes wearing Springbak® Springsoles required more than twice the force to be displaced from the plate. His conclusion: a significant increase in stability and functional strength under laboratory conditions.

More than twice the amount of force to be displaced from the force plate.

Stability is vertical inches

A jump that leaks sideways is a jump you do not get credit for. Rebounds are not taken in a lab; they are taken off one leg, off balance, with a body arriving on your hip. Stability at the plant is what converts strength you already own into height you can actually reach.

The four-week honesty test

  • Measure a standing vertical and an approach vertical on the same surface, same shoes, same time of day.
  • Log three attempts each and keep the best — noise ruins averages at this scale.
  • Change one variable at a time. Program, shoes, or platform — not all three.
  • Re-test every two weeks, never daily. Daily numbers measure your sleep, not your training.

Track it in the Athlete Tools section of this app. Inches you do not write down are inches you will argue about later.
